Tradition + Innovation = The Sweet Spot for Education
There are tried-and-true traditional teaching strategies we all value and, when combined with the latest innovative approaches, can be enhanced and improved. For example: lecture + digital formative assessment, analytical essay + book promo video, research + podcast creation, data analysis + infographic design, and much more! In this course, you’ll be encouraged to adopt a growth mindset as you reimagine how teaching and learning is changing in response to our rapidly changing world. We’ll identify times when digital tools should be used, and times when they should NOT be used. You’ll have a chance to redesign existing lessons to incorporate traditional and innovative approaches so that you’re finding the perfect balance in education.

Transforming teaching practice by creating time and space for pedagogical dialogue
This presentation will showcase the necessity of transforming practice to reflect modern learning in a 1:1 programme. I will highlight how we sought to transform our pedagogy to reveal significant classroom engagement and student learning by investing time to establish a pedagogical dialogue in teachers' schedules trough "pedagogical circles". Inspired by the work of Ritchhart, Church and Morrison  (2011) and Ritchhart  (2015) through Project Zero at Harvard, teachers delved into an examination of their practice to integrate "visible thinking" routines to transform their pedagogy and engage students in deeper thinking and learning. Through "pedagogical circles", teachers have led pedagogical and physical transformations of their classrooms to exhibit active and deep learning. Records of teachers' reflections and classroom observations on a blog, as well as bi-monthly discussions were instrumental to bringing forward significant change.

The Art of Reflection
Far too often when time in class gets short, we omit the chance for students to reflect on their learning. How can we strengthen and enhance the ability of students to reflect, and to share that reflection with their community of learners. What do leading experts and researchers say about the importance of reflection. Perhaps more importantly, how can we move from exit slips and essay to a wider variety of engaging methods.

A Willingness to Adapt: Living Our Mission
Utilizing our mission as our guide and following four core principles (Program Development, Classroom/Curriculum Implementation/Integration, Professional Development, and Reflection/Evaluation), students and educators from Blake Middle School have brought an engaging student-centered model to fruition.  This session will focus on two of these core principles...
  • Classroom/Curriculum Implementation/Integration (Student/Teacher demonstrations across curricula demonstrating the applications of the program; Fostering creativity/redefinition and reflections/curation via student portfolios)
  • Professional Development Structure (ETT, common planning, internal structures, appropriate staffing, #Edcamps, #DLDMedfield)
Participants will walk away with a framework to help address questions, highlighting our approach to thematic professional development, a culture of collaboration, student creativity, policies and procedures, purposeful learning, and digital citizenry.  Areas of specific focus include…student recognition and feedback, standards-based reporting, project-based learning, Genius Hour, student-led conferences, district determined measures, and student-generated portfolios.
We will exhibit our methods of transparency and communication with the parents and greater community, philosophy of mistakes, and professional development model.  The lessons we have learned, and approach we have taken as a team to enhance the learning for our students, will hopefully help with sharing our approach, successes, mistakes, and process of growth.  At the heart of all of this work is our ‘willingness to adapt’.

Personalize Learning To Amplify Student Voice & Agency
Successful personalized learning environments not only optimize instructional approaches to students needs and interests, but also emphasize student agency in which they take ownership of the learning. To do this effectively, students must become co-designers of the learning environment in which they are provided with choice and autonomy regarding what, how, when and where they learn. Personalized learning done well also promotes social and emotional learning by amplifying student voice as learners actively engage and collaborate with educators, students, and outside networks throughout the learning process. During this session, participants will explore these concepts along with specific examples of this in action across the nation. Participants will leave with practical strategies and resources that will help them implement these approaches in their educational settings.
