Competency-based education (CBE) has become a driver of deeper learning and meaningful engagement as educators strive to better prepare students for college and careers. CBE enables students to progress at their own pace based on mastery of content rather than time spent at a desk. In this interactive session, Dan Corsetti, Assistant Principal of Washington Middle School in Meriden, CT will demonstrate how school administrators can create a culture of learning that supports teachers in implementing competency-based practices in their classrooms.

Dan will draw from his expertise as a student-centered learning coach and member of the Meriden Public Schools District Leadership team to share strategies on aligning competency-based approaches with curriculum, instruction and assessment and promote more personalized and equitable learning opportunities for all students. This session will be helpful to educators, school administrators and district leaders working at both the middle and high school levels.

The session will engage participants in breakout groups to assess their readiness for implementing competency approaches and participants will learn how to foster a school culture of CBE that bolsters student learning as well as teachers’ connectivity to work. Audience members can contribute to the conversation in real time using the social media chatter tool TodaysMeet.
