Making a movie is one of the most diverse learning experiences, project-based at it’s core. It’s not just about the visuals but about all the different mediums coming together to tell a cohesive story. From thinking about genre to crafting an engaging story to filming and fine tuning during editing to sharing and processing feedback. For us, every movie project ends on YouTube. But that’s the least important part. Crafting the story, writing the script, storyboarding the action, creating sets and staging scenes, all these different things happen within, but also without, technology. The writing process is key, the editing and revising of every step of the process, the story telling... This session will take a look at how 4th and 5th graders make movies for everything from a unit on immigration to public service announcements about social and environmental issues. How we start with an idea, research the genre, write the scripts, record, edit and share. We use stop motion, iPads, MacBooks, and even Chromebooks. Making a movie is a project-based writing project that transcends content area and can be done across the technology spectrum, with plenty of analog components too.
